How to Strength Train like an Olympian

You don’t have to be on the Olympic stage to train like an Olympian. Here’s how you can use four key components of an Olympic mindset to transform your workout experience and achieve greater success in the gym.

Visualize your success

Olympians are masters of setting clear, specific, and achievable goals. They break down their ultimate objectives into manageable milestones, which helps them stay focused and motivated, and paint vivid mental images of success in their sport. They might visualize every aspect of their performance, from the feeling of their muscles moving to the emotions of crossing the finish line or landing a perfect routine.

The most decorated Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps has credited much of his success to visualization. He mentally rehearsed his races down to the smallest detail, including potential problems and how he would overcome them. This process helps athletes build confidence and reduce their anxiety. They’re prepared for any scenario.

For anyone in the gym, adopting this approach can be transformative. Whether you’re at it on your work or working with a knowledgeable personal trainer, start by setting clear fitness goals, whether it’s losing weight, building muscle, or improving endurance. Break these goals down into smaller, achievable targets. Visualize yourself achieving these targets. Picture yourself lifting heavier weights, running faster, or completing more reps. This mental rehearsal prepares you for the physical effort and reinforces your belief in your abilities.

Stay consistent

Success in the gym starts with showing up. After all, Olympians are made, not born. Olympians understand the importance of accountability, consistency and discipline in their training. They stick to their routines, even when motivation wanes, and they show up every day ready to give their best effort. For truly any gym-goer or athlete, adopting this level of commitment can lead to significant progress.

Create a workout schedule that fits your lifestyle and stick to it. As with anything, consistency is key to seeing results in strength training. Even on days when you don’t feel like working out, remind yourself of your goals and the long-term benefits of staying disciplined. Over time, this consistency will become a habit that sustains itself.

Support yourself (and your team)

Positive self-talk and affirmations are crucial for building and maintaining confidence, and Olympians use these techniques to combat negative thoughts and reinforce a positive mindset.

Self-talk involves the internal dialogue that athletes have with themselves, which can significantly impact their performance. For instance, U.S. gymnastics teammates Simone Biles and Suni Lee use positive self-talk to boost their confidence before and during competitions. Before hitting the floor and securing the bronze medal in the women’s all-round event in Paris, Lee repeated “mind over matter” from the sidelines. Whatever words you choose, this positive reinforcement can help you stay motivated and focused—even when faced with challenges or setbacks.

Affirmations are short, positive statements that athletes repeat to themselves regularly. These statements are designed to counteract self-doubt and build self-belief. By consistently affirming their strengths and capabilities, athletes can create a mental environment that fosters success. A supportive community and gym culture makes everyone stronger.

Be flexible

Taking a flexible approach to fitness doesn’t mean you slack off, but it does mean you listen to your body. Olympians are adaptable and patient, understanding that progress takes time and setbacks are part of the journey. They adjust their training plans as needed and remain patient, trusting the process. This mindset is crucial for anyone pursuing specific fitness goals.

Be flexible with your fitness plan and open to adjusting it based on your progress and circumstances. If you hit a plateau or face an injury, adapt your routine. Patience is essential for long-term success. Recognize that progress might feel slow sometimes, but every effort counts towards your ultimate goals.
